Winter Hike: Trail 16 Bear Hollow

  • LSP Trail 16 / FLT Access E 7300 River Road Mount Morris, NY, 14510 United States (map)

Register Here: Trail 16 Bear Hollow

Length: 4.0 miles

Difficulty: Trail 16 is moderately difficult, trail goes down almost to the gorge bottom. Approximately 300 feet climb back up from gorge bottom to top. Be aware we will be going down to the bottom twice (600 feet!), but you will have the option to bail out after the first descent if you don't feel like doing it twice. Know that the second descent is one of the prettiest portions of the park - one of those not to be missed hikes.

Meeting Place: Two options: meet in Mt. Morris by 9:40am at the Zeppo's Ice Cream (park under/near the mural just to the left of Zeppo's), or meet us by 9:50am at the Trail 16 trailhead (FLT Access E). Trail 16 trailhead is on River Road, between Ridge Rd East & Frost Road. Chances are you'll drive past the trailhead and need to turn around if you're unfamiliar with its location (and you won't be the first person to drive right past it!). It is well camouflaged until you're right on top of it.

Duration: 3 hours

Price: $10 - click on ticket link

Bring: Headlamp, warm layered clothing, gloves, hat and any emergency medication.

MICROSpikes recommended if light snow or ice. We'll have them to rent for $10 if you don't have a pair. Snowshoes if snow is 6+ inches or deeper, and are $20 to rent. Headlamps also available to rent for $10. All rental prices can be applied to purchase same day as rental.

Please leave home: Alcohol (prohibited in the park without a permit), pets (darkness, slippery conditions)

Trail 16: Bear Hollow

Join the Trail Otter Gang for another Winter Hike . We'll meet at Trail 16's trailhead. Arrive by 9:50am to sign waivers and start hiking by 10am. This trail is a weird one, with a few offshoots that keep you guessing where you are. It can be a bit wet/muddy in spots, so make sure you have your waterproof shoes and gaiters if you have them. We'll hike the trail in its entirety, so those working on their Hiked 'Em All can check it off their list. We will also hike a trail adjacent to the official trail that is one of the prettiest areas of the park - not to be missed, but it will take you down to the gorge bottom again. You can bailout if you don't feel like climbing back out again. Figure on 4 miles of hiking with some steep climbs.

Hope you can join us!
