INTRO TO BACKPACKING: Two-hour class in an informal setting where we’ll discuss what you need to have a comfortable and enjoyable experience backpacking. We’ll start with gear systems (sleeping, shelter/protection, food/cooking and restroom). Then we’ll provide tips & tricks, followed by how to avoid animal encounters, and finishing with getting in shape for your first trip!

We also have one- and two-day backpacking trips to practice these skills and feel more confident. Your Trail Otter guides will help you build confidence. Includes in-the-field workshop where we’ll practice identifying a campsite, lay out the “bearmuda” triangle, setup a bear hang, dig a cathole, setup a tent & cooking area and many other skills to know when you’re out on the trail.

SINGLE NIGHT TRIPS: Get your feet wet (well, you know what we mean!) and experience a night out in the wilderness. We have really cool locations to take you that are close to our store, where you can try out a night and see if backpacking is for you. Bring your own gear, or rent the gear you need. Locations include Letchworth’s Finger Lakes Trail branch, and a secret location in Dalton NY with Milky Way stars and little light pollution.

TWO NIGHT TRIPS: Enjoy the outdoors a little longer and have a full day in the woods. Cool locations. Offered in September & October. Learn more skills and explore a little further!

MULTI-DAY TRIPS: If you are ready, let’s go on a 5-day trip in the Western Adirondacks. Complete the Cranberry 50 (and get a cool patch!). Experience the beauty of Cranberry Lake, near Tupper Lake, and enjoy both lakeside and interior tent and lean to campsites. Offered in August & September. A true Adirondack experience!
